Texas wildlife and sporting artist Wade Butler’s “An Early Start” is a most appropriate image for TOJ’s July cover. During the dog days of summer, anglers looking to be suc- cessful will make sure they are on the water early before the heat builds and gamefish retreat to deeper water.

These anglers have already made their way to the area they will begin to wade. With expectations of a great morning of fishing they are also greeted by a colorful sunrise.

Something else anglers need to be aware is of quickly building storms. They can occur at first light, or any time during the day. When observed, it’s best to move away from the storms or seek safe harbor.
