About the April 2026 Cover
What a special time to be outdoors during the month of April. The sights and sounds of the fourth month of the year are reminders of the life cycles in the out of doors.
Colorful wildflowers paint a backdrop as spring turkey hunters pursue these equally colorful birds. According to Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s turkey report there are plenty of two- and three-year-old gobblers this year for hunters to be called in close. These young gobblers are easier to entice with hen yelps or purrs and putts.
Popular Texas wildlife artist Brian Grimm has captured a glimpse of three gobblers moving and feeding together. Through this time there is a “Pecking Order” established with competition that continues for the rest of these gobblers’ life. Much like other males of wildlife species, the pecking order establishes breeding hierarchy or rights.
The entire month of April across the entire expanse of the Lone Star State is available for this pageantry and floral beauty to be observed. If you are a hunter being successful in calling a gobbler and harvesting that bird creates a desire to duplicate this event each and every year.
