Besides the overview of conditions of rangeland and animals a few tips are offered to help increase hunting success. These words-to-the-wise might provide the edge needed for an even more successful hunting season.
Read on and become enlighten from the insights provided by TPWD’s team of wildlife biologist. A big thank you to all that contributed and resulted in this year’s expanded forecast.
REGION 1, DISTRICT 1, Trans-Pecos (West Texas)
Alpine based District Leader said, “For most of the Trans-Pecos, 2026 has largely mirrored 2025. The region received strong early rainfall with consistent precipitation through spring and into June and July. August has been hot and dry, but a return of monsoonal rains in September would leave conditions favorable going into fall.
“Current drought status ranges from no drought to abnormally dry, with a small area in moderate drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Overall habitat conditions have improved significantly over the last 18 months. Vegetation has recovered well, providing improved cover and forage that should benefit wildlife populations across the region. Carryover from last year likely supported adequate fawning cover for mule deer and nesting cover for quail, which should translate into higher population numbers.
