4-H Teen Leadership Retreat near Brownwood slated Jan. 10-12

4-H members ages 13-19 will have an opportunity to hone their leadership  skills during several 4-H programs at the 2014 Teen Leadership Retreat Jan. 10-12 at the Texas 4-H Conference Center at Lake Brownwood.

“The Teen Leadership Retreat will have 4-H volunteers, 4-H specialists and college professors conducting hands-on educational workshops with 4-H members from throughout the state,” said Mark Carroll, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service 4-H and youth specialist and conference center program director. “This year’s program will focus on increasing knowledge and skills in five 4-H project areas — entomology, fashion, consumer decision making, dance, and wildlife  habitat.”

Carroll said the retreat provides a “state level leadership experience” for attendees, allowing them to explore new or revised projects and curricula resources and return to implement them in their counties.

The retreat will begin with registration from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 10, followed by a general orientation, adult chaperone meeting, dance and vespers.

Jan. 11 activities start at 7:30 a.m., and include a flag ceremony, breakfast and opening assembly. Much of the day will be devoted to concurrent sessions related to the five featured programming areas, along with team activities and an evening dance.

Jan. 12 activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a flag ceremony and breakfast, followed by cleaning out the dorms prior to departure at 10 a.m.

Carroll said while this is a learning retreat, the main ingredient for the weekend is “a sense of fun.”

To register, go to the center’s website, http://texas4hcenter.tamu.edu . Registration is $115 for youth and $80 for adults, which includes two nights lodging, four meals, snacks and all program supplies. The deadline for registration is Dec. 31.

Each county is requested to provide adult chaperones for the weekend. If there is no chaperone, one will be provided for an additional $90 fee.
