About the August Cover
Texas continues to swelter in the grip of summer’s heat. That means gamefish, particularly speckled trout along the coast have headed deep seeking cooler water temperatures. Texas jetties, the deeper rocks in Baffin Bay and other deep hard structure are prime places to find trout when it’s hot.
Calvin Carter’s “On The Rocks” shows a nice trout swirling on a silver spoon as it is worked around some rocks. Anglers should move up to a slightly heavier weight lure that will help get the offering down to the deeper depths.
Carter said he spent a lot of time at Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson observing speckled trout and really got a better appreciation of the fish, observing underwater angles, and other information he can add to his artwork. “I think it offers a different perspective of the fish we pursue, and is a different look that separates my art from other works that are out there,” he said.
