About the May 2017 Cover
This month’s cover art is something that has been anticipated and promoted for years – a painting of wild hogs. There are countless numbers of beautiful wildlife and sporting art of whitetail deer, waterfowl, speckled trout, largemouth bass, upland gamebirds as well as numerous other piscatorial species and terrestrial game animals. However, when it comes to wild boar or hogs there are just a few dated images or sketches. Many of those are by European artist.
Years of suggestions to paint this challenging animal were scoffed at or discounted. However, wild hog hunting, its expanding population and popularity in Texas as well as other states warrant this animal to be represented in the art world.
Popular wildlife artist Dallen Lambson acted on the suggestion and his “The Tuskan Raiders” depicts two bristly wild boar in a setting suspiciously similar to that found in parts of Texas. Pine trees, thick brush plus a place where these critters have rubbed tell of some of the habits of wild swine. Readers will also notice that all of the hunting related articles this month provide more insight and experiences when in pursuit of these foreign imports gone wild.
