About the November 2024 Cover
The statewide quail season in Texas has been open for a few days. It opened on October 26 and continues through February 23, 2025. The daily bag limit is 15 birds with a possession limit of 45.
However, the harvest is incidental to the field-experiences for most veteran quail hunters. There’s more to the hunt than getting a limit. Most times it is about the camaraderie with similarly passionate hunters and the dog work. Particularly special dogs.
This month’s cover art is obviously about a special dog and is entitled “Cooper Dog” by popular Texas artist Chance Yarbrough. The painting was a commission of a family’s treasured setter. So that must be a special dog.
Most quail dogs are short-haired pointing breeds. They are easier to groom and particularly to get grass-burrs out of the coat. However, the love of a special canine hunting companion is worth the extra effort.
Then in the field when a beautiful point is made, or a bracemate’s point is honored, are the rewarding moments while experiencing the hunt. Many times, it provides validation and satisfaction of the time, energy and certainly money invested for special moments to be shared by two and four-legged hunters alike.
