Annual Guppy Cup Celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day the Galveston Way

Sold out event celebrates community and a passion for the outdoors

GALVESTON — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Game Warden Association will be hosting the 3rd annual Cast Away Rods Guppy Cup KidFish on Saturday, September 25. The competition will run in conjunction with the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival and National Hunting and Fishing Day.

“Three years ago, we developed the Guppy Cup as an opportunity for first time anglers and their parents to learn more about fishing,” said Lieutenant Game Warden Nguyen who facilitates the competition every year. “With game wardens from around the area assisting, the Guppy Cup is now an opportunity to interact with our community and connect them with the outdoors.”

Featuring a tournament style set up, awards for the heaviest fish and opportunities for kids to weigh their catch, the event’s popularity has risen over the years. Lt. Nguyen remarked that success has resulted in a sold-out event that is no longer taking participants.

“It’s exciting to receive this kind of feedback from the local community,” said Nguyen. “We are already looking ahead to next year and figuring out ways to include more families.”

The Cast Away Rods Guppy Cup KidFish kicks off with check in at 9:30 a.m. on Pier 21 in Galveston.
