Old School Advice

Story by Tom Claycomb III

I still think that I’m 18 years old.  That is evident by some of my actions. But then sometimes when I’m around a youngster I think well, maybe I have accumulated a little wisdom.

I’ve never written an article like this one. What I want to do is to throw out a few words of advice, suggestions and tricks I’ve learned over my decades of hunting.

First, a mistake I think a lot of people make is to only have two or three tricks up their hunting sleeves. If those don’t work, they just keep beating their head against the wall using the same method(s).

If it isn’t working do something different. Due to things not working I’ve had to change techniques that forced me to try and learn new techniques numerous times while hunting or fishing. Which many times have resulted in phenomenal results through no superior planning on my part.

So, whether you’re hunting or fishing, the same mental process needs to be employed. Don’t keep beating your head against the same wall! Sure, sometimes nothing works but I bet if you keep experimenting that lack of success is not as big of a percentage of the time as you may think.

Plus keep on seeking new information from reliable sources.  Consider the source, hunt location and how it might apply to your particular hunt situation.  There may even be a time to try something so different it might be considered “off the wall.”

Years ago, my wife Katy and I were deer hunting on a buddy’s ranch. He had quite a bit of land on the river and a big cornfield on the other side of the dirt road north of the river with rolling pastures.

A few weeks before opening day we built a tree stand on the north fence line between the pasture and the cornfield. My buddy said the deer really travelled that area. Opening morning found us setting in our blind a good hour before daylight. It was a cold morning and when the sun had just started peeking over the horizon I noticed Katy had pulled off her boots and placed her mittens over her toes that according to her were warmer than her boots.
