TPWD to Conduct Prescribed Burn at Mustang Island State Park This Week
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Wildland Fire Team will be implementing a prescribed fire at Mustang Island State Park this week beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The burn should not affect campers or day-use visitors on the gulf side of State Highway 361, but public access to the bay-side of the park will be closed during the burn.
The gates on the access roads to the bay-side will be locked at 10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, in preparation for the event.
Mariners on Nueces Bay near the Mustang Island State Park shoreline may experience smoky conditions and should avoid these areas or navigate with due caution for the existing conditions.
Prescribed burns are an important land management tool used to reduce fuel loads in case of a wildfire; control exotic and invasive species; and restore native grasses vital for native wildlife.
