About The April 2023 Cover
All reports and field observations indicate the small recruitment numbers of turkey poults should mean there will be plenty of mature gobblers in the field for hunters this spring. Prior to the two down years of poults there were good years of poults that hatched out and survived across the Lone Star State. Hunters can use this information when hunting this spring.
Successful turkey hunting tactics will include pre-hunt scouting, roosting birds the night before the hunt, use of hen and jake decoys and some good turkey talk. This will not only include yelps, but also “The Cluck and Purr,” which is the title of this month’s cover art by popular Texas wildlife and western artist Brian Grimm.
With the majority of gobblers being mature birds soft subtle calls should get the attention of love-struck gobblers. There really isn’t need for excessive, aggressive calling. Just act like a receptive hen and let those Toms know where you are located.
