About the September 2025 Cover

It’s that time as the countdown to the opening of the first regulated hunting seasons of the fall is at hand.  Many hunters fixated on these days since the last shot was fired in anticipation to the smell of spent shells wafting through the air.

Dove seasons open in September, and popular South Texas based artist Don Breeden has painted the successful results of time spent afield with his “Brace of Whitewing Dove.”  This used to be relegated to South Texas or back-in-the-day to trips across the Rio Grande into Old Mexico.

Today these adaptable birds nest across the Lone Star State.  Whitewings found in gamebags are still readily found in South Texas but also many of the points on a compass in North, Central and eastern edges of west Texas.

The painting represents the first step of several — the harvest has been made and so have memories.  Now stories are shared as the birds are cleaned and prepared in a variety of ways for the grill.  Then the mesquite smoke infuses the meat creating succulent bites of bacon wrapped, cheese filled dove breasts and jalapeno.  The roasting aroma provides the final enticement before the results meet taste buds and palate.  Thank you, Lord, as hunting seasons have returned.
