Spring Hunting Options — Blast and Cast, Then Blast Again

Spring Hunting Options — Blast and Cast, Then Blast Again

Story by Tom Claycomb III

A lot of our hunts are intense. We wake up early, jump in a blind hours before daylight, hunt all day and get back to camp way after dark. If you got lucky, when you get back to camp you have to skin and hang your deer, hog or whatever was shot.

Next you have to whip out something for dinner, and after that you probably don’t even feel like reading one of my Pulitzer Prize winning articles! Some of our hunts are that tough.

However, my Spring outdoor activities are pretty kicked back and relaxing. Not too intense. Sure, a few of them can be tiring but not like the intensity of fall hunts. So, if you’ve got cabin fever, here are a few suggested, fun springtime outdoor adventures. I don’t know about you but I’m ready.

Before I give you the list of activities let me tell you why I’m really looking forward to getting out this Spring. I got a little scarred for life this winter. Bill Olson and I were supposed to do a sandhill crane hunt a couple of weeks before Christmas with 24 Outfitters south of Abilene in Winters Texas. I was in South Dakota on a two to three week trip and was going to fly home to Idaho on Wednesday to grab my gear, jump on another plane and meet Bill at the DFW Airport Friday at noon and us hunt until Tuesday.

Then — a BLIZZARD hit. My flight was cancelled Wednesday morning. Another one canceled on Thursday morning, Thursday night, Friday morning, and Saturday morning.  I finally got out of South Dakota on a flight for Idaho Saturday night.

But there was a connecting flight and I got stuck overnight in Minneapolis Minnesota. Needless to say, our hunt was toast.

To make matters worse, for the last two months 24 Outfitter’s head honcho Ryan Gardner had been sending hourly updates and videos of flocks of a bazillion sandhill cranes flying around his ranch that looked big enough to carrying off small school kids. I’ve never gotten to hunt sandhill cranes so I was really looking forward to it.
