Straight Up Handguns
Story by Shane Jahn
Today’s handgun hunters have a lot of options at their disposal for pursuing wild game with a favored sidearm. While handgun hunting might not get the press it did years ago, it is still very much a viable hunting method and one I predict will see a resurgence and grow in the future.
Truth is there are a lot of hunters who take to the field each season solely armed with a handgun. I’m friends with many of them on Facebook. You don’t read a lot about it or see it as often on television because there just isn’t an overwhelming number of outdoor writers or TV personalities currently devoting a lot of time and attention to it.
Like the bow hunter, the handgunner oftentimes will need to be more patient and practice a bit more woodsmanship than the skilled rifleman who is prepared to take his whitetail at 400 yards with a precision rig and a steady rest. Depending on the handgun being used, most times the hunter will need to get a little closer to ensure an accurate, killing shot. Sometimes very close, within 50 yards or less. If possible, I prefer less! This means real hunting. Getting as close as possibly to an animal so the odds are in our favor of placing the first shot right where it needs to go.
You may be well seasoned in the art of handgun hunting or simply contemplating giving it a try, it’s never too late to learn and share our experiences with one another. It’s also important to point out you don’t have to strictly adhere to one hunting method over another. Handgun hunting is simply a method to spice up the hunting experience. Hunting with a handgun adds to the hunting challenge.
