About The February 2024 Cover
February is for the dedicated coastal grinders willing to endure any conditions and do whatever it takes for that one precious subtle tug indicating a quality or even a trophy has been hooked. It’s spending time slowly working a topwater lure or slow sinking bait trying to entice a big yellow-mouth sow trout to eat. These fish are not just gifts but earned specimens reserved for the most hardy.
Popular Texas artist Calvin Carter’s painting “Trophy Winter Trout” depicts one of those really good days of his friend Capt. Eric Gonsoulin with a big trout. It looks like a day after a front has passed when the sun is bright and warming a shallow flat. Anglers fan out to slowly and stealthily cover ground to see if they can entice a big female speck to eat.
On this day it looks as though the action holds more than just a bite or two but some solid activity that further stokes the fires to continue to ply the waters. Each cast may result in another solid fish or truly a fish of a lifetime.
