About the January 2024 Cover
Texas has the climate and resources to provide hunters with a variety of game to pursue year-round in diverse landscapes. Exotic game from many places around the world provide opportunities on game ranches as well as free-ranging animals that have escaped to thrive on the Lone Star States’ open range. Axis deer are one specie that challenges hunters plus wildlife game managers and landowners.
Popular Texas artist Don Breeden has captured the beautiful imported chital or spotted deer whose facial coloration seems to display an almost “scowl” look of defiance of this challenging, prolific animal in his watercolor “Axis Deer.” As a herd animal on open range, expanding axis populations can literally out-hustle native wildlife and have an adverse impact to vital native vegetation and riparian areas.
Challenging to hunt plus hard to pattern, axis deer are excellent editions as impressive trophies and a succulent game meat as table fare. A variety of hunting methods are employed to harvest axis. Numerous opportunities to hunt axis are available throughout the Hill Country and south Texas for bucks as well as doe that must be a part of a game management plan where these animals live. It’s a hunt opportunity that should not be missed, and a vital role Texas hunters need to participate in the management of wildlife.
