About the January 2026 Cover

Many Texas hunters think once the whitetail deer seasons close, hunting in Texas is pretty much over.  That misconception could not be further from the truth.  Texas has some great year-round hunting for a variety of game animals 12 months of the year.

Popular south Texas artist Don Breeden provides this month’s cover art that highlights a few of the game animals and gamebirds Texas hunters can pursue and is entitled “South Texas Wildlife.”  Whitetail deer, nilgai, collard peccary or javelina, Rio Grande turkey, mourning and whitewing dove plus bobwhite quail are just a few animals available to hunt.

With the rainfall the south Texas Brush Country received this year recruitment of game has been very good.  That bodes well for future years of hunting opportunities and a chance for hunters to enjoy more of the diverse landscape of the part of our State.
