About The July 2025 Cover
One thing many artists have in common is they are fairly well traveled. Such is the case for this month’s cover painter Doug Waldrus. He was born in St. Paul Minnesota. Spent most of his childhood in Omaha Nebraska, lived a few years in San Antonio Texas but calls Hartsville Tennessee his long-time permanent residence.
A self-taught artist his encounters with various wildlife provided the inspiration for his paintings. Overtime his paintings have caught the eye of several conservation and state agencies that resulted in him being named artist of the year,
Waldrus can add to his impressive list of credentials, the fist catfish painting to ever be featured as cover art in Texas Outdoors Journal’s 33 year history. Rajun Cajun celebrates what the second most popular gamefish in Texas behind largemouth bass and most popular freshwater gamefish in Louisiana as well many other states.
The cover art provides a painted profile of the popular whiskerfish. Woody structure, rocky bottom and available prey, in this case a small bass.
Rajun Cajun certainly depicts what many freshwater anglers enjoy — a willing gamefish to catch and then enjoy on the table. This painting will have anglers in Texas, Louisiana throughout the South or wherever catfish fin recalling memories of the last time they hooked up with one of the catfish species.
