With the arrival of March, the North and South Zone seasons for Rio Grande turkey will open.  In April the remaining season for Rios and the limited season for Eastern turkey in Texas will also open.  Across the Lone Star State an army of camo clad hunters will be afield offering yelps, purrs and putts trying to entice a gobbler to come to them.

It’s the annual breeding season and every gobbler is up to his cocky-self strutting and walking with a “Spring In His Step,” the title of this month’s cover art by popular Texas artist Brian Grimm.  The competition for hens is high and many times multiple gobblers will be responding to the love-calls.

Spring turkey season is one of the most exciting ways to hunt by calling in close a mature longbeard.  It puts quarry and hunter within mere feet of each other during this hunting season that garners most of the headlines each spring.
