About the May 2025 Cover
Reviewing some historical maps that tracs the wild hog invasion shows coastal regions was and maintains a stronghold for these animals. Given Texas history it makes sense those that discovered these lands made landfall along our Gulf coast. Those same explorers brought sus scrofa with them and released them as a fairly reliable source of protein.
Add to those numbers during the battle for Texas Independence and during the runaway scrape there had to have been livestock left to fend for themselves. In more recent year more escapees from game ranches were added and have become free-rangers.
It is no wonder popular Texas artist Don Breeden’s “Hog Wild in South Texas” is so apply named. In the dry and fickle arid weather of the Brush Country hogs will be around any water source as well as prickly pear flats. These hogs offer year-round hunting opportunities and some great table fare as well.
