About the November 2025 Cover

Deer hunters and quail hunters are looking forward to these season openers that both occur on November 1.  In recent years those two opening dates did not occur on the same day.  That allowed some early quail hunting before deer season opens, and for some hunters the resumption of or opportunity to bird hunt once whitetail season closes.

However, this year that decision to choose one over the other is even more difficult.  Good timely rainfall has created excellent habitat resulting in several years of a good hatch and quail recruitment.  These back-to-back good years help quail numbers continue to increase.

Popular Texas wildlife and sporting artist Calvin Carter’s painting entitled “That Shining Moment” captures some of the elements dedicated quail hunters live to experience.  Good dog-work results in a birddog pointing a covey trying to hide in the prickly pear.

As hunters move in to pressure a hiding covey that results in an “explosion” of bobs taking flight and winging in different directions.  The shooting is quick, and hunters need to be mindful of safe zones of fire, plus where other hunters and dogs are to keep these exciting moments safe for all.
