About the October 2025 Cover
The buck is a magnificently mature animal — one that has gained the years to dominate a significant area and claim doe to carry his offspring.
The other half of this month’s cover art by popular wildlife artist Pat Pauley entitled “Untamed Spirit” tells the rest of the story. A little hollow or pocket surrounded by hills create a haven for deer as pressure from a variety of sources changes normal routines to escape and survive.
The buck is on his own and making rounds seeking receptive doe. Depending upon timing, it might be a little early or a time to wait until the females cycle once again. It’s only a matter of time. Until then there’s a mast crop to forage upon — and wait. It’s a bit ironic, even in the animal world there is an appropriate time for most everything.
Bowhunters this month joined by other hunters during the general season will “play the rut” over the next few months. This quiet, and fairly secure spot is a perfect place to be regularly checked by this buck with an “untamed spirit.” It’s now his place and time to satisfy the testosterone spike that dictates whitetail deer movement this time of year. It is a most exciting time of year for the buck and deer hunters
