It is good to be Glenn Eller right now.

The reigning Double Trap World Champion has been frequently finding himself atop the medal stands this fall, and today he picked up the third World Cup Final medal of his career by adding a silver at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup Finals in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Eller (USAMU/Houston, Texas) entered the finals in second place, just two targets behind Binyuan Hu of China in qualification. Eller’s U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and 2012 Olympic teammate Josh Richmond (USAMU/Hillsgrove, Pa.) also qualified for the final in third place, just one target behind Eller.

In the new ISSF finals format, however, all six finalists compete in a 15-pair shoot-off to determine rankings and medal match-ups. Eller and Richmond tied in the semifinal for second place with both men shooting 29/30. Eller would eventually edge out Richmond for the gold-medal final in a shootoff, 8-7.

Eller then went on to face Vasily Mosin of Russia for the gold. Though Mosin qualified in sixth place, he shot a perfect 30/30 in the semifinal to move on in the top position. Though Eller only dropped one target in the gold-medal final, Mosin once again shot a perfect 30/30 for the win.

Richmond’s 27/30 performance wasn’t enough to take the bronze medal from World Cup Granada gold medalist Davide Gasparini of Italy who shot 29/30.

Ian Rupert (Muncy Valley, Pa.) fought hard through 12 shootoff shots in qualification, but just missed securing a spot in the final to place seventh overall.

At the conclusion of the World Cup series each year, the best eight athletes in each event with the highest qualification values will qualify for the ISSF World Cup Final. Qualification points are earned through ranking and in relation to the score(s) shot by the athlete at each World Cup.  Additional “wild card” slots are granted to the title defenders, and, in the years of the Olympic Games and of the World Championships, to the three medalists in each event.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.) was slated to compete in Men’s Skeet on Sunday, but Hancock decided not to make the trip due to family obligations.
