Interacting With Whitetails
The unforgettable experiences that puts the hunt back into hunting.
Story and Photography by Bob Zaiglin
Have you ever experienced a large whitetail buck in your face drooling from its mouth glaring at you like you owed it money? Well, if you haven’t December is the time to get your chance as those old belligerent bucks will let their guard down and fall prey to what I refer to as interactive hunting techniques.
As we enter December, hunters, particularly in South Texas, enjoy the most exciting time of the year when it comes to pursuing whitetails. Some hunters will spend hours in elevated 4×6 box blinds enjoying what their kids refer to as ‘time out’. But for those who relish the thrill of taking advantage of deer behavior, their time will be spent in the brush with a pair of antlers and a grunt call attempting to lure one of those ole wraiths up close for a shot. The amazing thing, however, it’s not what they shoot but the unforgettable experiences they enjoy by putting the hunt back into hunting.
There is much that can be said of sabotaging an ole buck, as it takes countless hours of knowledge-gathering time in the deer woods in order to increase the chances of being at the right place at the right time. But when it comes to rattling up a brute other than periodically being partially concealed while concocting a mock buck fight, the hunter is mobile, covering a lot of ground, seldom if ever visited by a hunter.
