There’s Help Out There
A tip of the hat to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and all of the hard working folks making Texans’ fishing lives better.
Story and photography by Brian Hughes
Did you ever notice how sometimes things just seem to conspire against you, to keep you from going fishing? Especially the three w’s, weather, work, and wives.
Think about it. How many times have you spent a week working, while it was perfect fishing conditions, only to then have the weekend turn out rainy and stormy? Or when the boss says he needs you on Saturday to help get that project done by deadline? Or when the better half decides that’s the day we’re going to do xyz? Sometimes it seems like you can never catch a break.
But there is hope. There’s a group of hardworking folks out there that are dedicated to improving your fishing opportunities. An entity that spends enormous amounts of money, and expends untold amounts of energy, just so you can have more, and better, fishing experiences.
And the more you know about them, the more you’ll be able to take advantage of those efforts on your behalf.
I’m talking of course about Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. I should say right up front that TPWD, like any government agency, makes its fair share of mistakes. Plus I don’t agree with many of the policies and actions they have put into place. However, you also have to give them credit where credit is due!
As wildlife agencies go, I’d have to put TPWD right up there at the top of any agencies anywhere in the country. Certainly Top 10, if not better. Let’s have a look at what they’ve done for all of the Texas freshwater anglers out there.
