On May 11, 2024, at the 66th Annual Texas Outdoor Writers Association Conference held in Rockport — Texas Outdoors Journal, TOJ Team Members and Texas Outdoor News radio one again increased their awards totals. Each year T.O.W.A.’s Excellence In Craft competition recognizes the best Texas print, broadcast journalism plus photography.

Texas Outdoors Journal was again rewarded in the highly competitive Outdoor Publication category receiving two of the three awards including First Place (November 2023 issue) and Second Place (January 2023 issue). This year’s awards, combined with the previous 26 years of winnings brings TOJ’s total to an unprecedented 26 consecutive years of recognition. No other outdoor publication can equal this level of sustained excellence.

Individual awards presented substantiated the consistent quality produced every month by Team TOJ. Dominating the Outdoor Photography – Wildlife and Outdoor Photography

— People categories was TOJ’s Whitetail Editor Bob Zaiglin. He won two of the three awards including First Place in Outdoor Photography — Wildlife plus another award for Outdoor Photography – People.

Awards for writing were presented to Harold Gunn who received an award in the Outdoor Column category for his historical account entitled “The Mighty .45-70” in the January 2023 issue.

TOJ’s Founder, Publisher and Editor Bill L. Olson picked up several awards for articles he wrote. In Outdoor Features he was awarded First Place for a story entitled “Wells Gone, but Not Forgotten (June 2023) and Second Place “Nilgai, Texas First Big Game Exotic” (January 2023). He also was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Outdoor News category for a report entitled “Late Season Quail Hunting Impact & Opportunities” (February 2023)

Texas Outdoors Journal’s information filled website resource was again recognized and again awarded First Place. TOJ’s website provides regular news updates plus useful tools for anglers and hunters not readily found or available. The content includes sunrise and sunsets, coastal maps of old well locations from the General Land Office, current lake levels and much more.

Texas Outdoor News radio remains the most honored outdoor radio show in Texas. The long running 31-year-old world-wide, weekly syndicated news/interview radio show collected two awards in the Outdoor Radio category including First and Second Place. This year’s guests on entries submitted were TOJ’s Shooting Editor Kerry O’Day and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Owen Fitzsimmons, “The Dove Guy.” Both guests provided great timely insights for listeners in advance of spring and fall hunting seasons.

Founded with the October 1992 issue, Texas Outdoors Journal is distributed statewide across the Lone Star State with additional readers residing throughout the United States. Timely year-round fishing, hunting, outdoors travel, and forecasts are covered in every monthly issue, 12 times each year.
