About The April 2025 Cover

Many associate April as the beginning of a new run of regulated hunting seasons.  Spring turkey season adds to the colorful month as gobblers and hens court, breed to continue populating the landscapes.  Mockingbirds are the official bird of Texas but I do believe the wild turkey had to have made a close second place finish.

Spring is a time of sounds from songbirds and turkey.  Yelps, purrs, putts and certainly gobbles echo across the lands.  Hens playing coy, gobblers displaying and fighting for the right to be the dominate one to breed receptive hens.

This month’s Cover Art “Early Bird” by popular Texas artist Brian Grim captures this frantic time of two toms beating a path to the next hen.  It is time full of sound and activity as turkey breed is undeway and the saying of the early bird is modified that it gets the hen.

Early in the season, even before hunting is allowed the calling and activity is the most aggressive.  Activity is at a frantic pace.  As one hen is bred, she goes to nest and the gobblers starts looking for another receptive mate.

This is a great time to be outside and this painting capture those memories when shut in due to inclement weather.  It is a reminder of Spring in Texas.
