About the August 2021 Cover

The Gulf of Mexico is a large, virtually featureless bowl with little natural structure to attract and hold bait as well as pelagic species.  However, what regularly occur are the long lines of sargassum that make their way across the Gulf.  On this journey these weed lines pick up discarded flotsam and become shady sanctuaries for bait that attract pelagic species and become prime targets for offshore anglers to troll, drift and fish.

This month’s cover art is by renowned marine artist Carey Chen.  He has captured a scene that every offshore angler looks forward to encountering.  His “Wahoo Haven” depicts the shade, cover and hidden bait that attract a variety of prized pelagic including wahoo, dorado and more.

August is a prime month for offshore fishing with many of the major tournaments held.  It also offers opportunities for the recreational blue water angler that fish from large Gulf-going battlewagons to the mosquito fleet.  From these crafts anglers will “swarm” anchored shrimp boats or work over coveted “numbers” this is the month in pursuit of finding their own wahoo haven.
