A New Year begins to unfold with a carryover of something old and prospects for things new.  That sounds like a “blast and cast” to many this time of year.  Hunting ducks in the morning or afternoon and when not blazing away with a shotgun battling thick shouldered redfish, speckled trout or other coastal species.  It’s the best of both worlds.

Popular Texas artist Calvin Carter has captured one of those days when the fishing is obviously good as both anglers are bowed up.  Plus it looks like the ducks know with rod in hand for this duo they can safely wing their way past to their next place to feed or roost.

Duck season in Texas continues through January 30.  The fishing for coastal species is beginning its trophy phase with other opportunities through the rest of the year to follow.
