The sun sunk below the oaks over my right shoulder as the shadows began to grow longer and the light, cool breeze blowing nearly straight at my face chilled the tip of my nose.
“This was as good as gets,” I thought, as every crack of a twig and rustling of a leaf accelerated my heartbeat.
With my bow at my side and an arrow nocked, my heart began to roar like the bass drum of a marching band as movement through the brush in the distance alerted my senses of the parade that would soon commence. One by one several deer entered the clearing and I hunkered down in the ground blind I was sitting in that was concealed in an oak mott by a pile of cedar and brush.
The mature buck stayed at a distance, slowly making his way towards the herd before me stopping only to graze for a few seconds before throwing his head up into the wind. His antlers glistened in the rays of the setting sun each time he lifted his head and I tried to avoid getting caught up in their shear magnitude of mass.
The nine-pointer’s thoughts were written all over his face as he constantly sniffed the evening air. It wasn’t forage he was after. He was simply scent checking the area, looking for a hot doe.
He seemed to remain skeptic as he eased in closer, yet still out of bow range. Only time would tell whether it would all come together before the last few grays of light would turn to black.
